Una Rosa Para Recordar/ A Rose For Remembrance
A rose for remembrance / Una rosa para recordar is a project that started on October 13th, 2019 and I’m currently undertaking in the span of one year. It consists of a piece of fabric 6’ x 5’ in which initially, I started embroidering 10 flowers each day that represented the current statistics of feminicide in Mexico in 2019. But, due to the self-isolation and quarantine measures to avoid the spread of COVID-19, domestic violence and feminicides have alarmingly raised to 11 women murdered daily. It is estimated that from April to June 2020 around one thousand women have been murdered due to gender violence.
On the one hand, the aim of the project is to serve as a visual reminder of the systematic and widespread violence that prevails in Mexico, since it’s easier to process such large numbers through an aesthetic experience. On the other hand, it is a way to commemorate all of our friends, sisters, daughters, and mothers, whose lives were tragically cut short.
